Lab reference ranges – general

In clinical trials and also post market surveillance and reporting there is often a need to apply reference ranges for lab values.

It can be very complicated as in clinical trials in the US for instance reference ranges from each local lab are used and this gives very inconsistent results when assessing if a value is abormal or for instance 2 x normal.

There are some published general reference ranges that can be applied and one of them is from the American Board of Internal medicine which can be helpful. You can find it on their website here or it can be downloaded in the July 2021 version here – ABIM laboratory-reference-ranges 2021
